I have been an Astros fan since 1980. I followed Billy the Kid and Shane Reynolds as the "fastest guns in the west". I never knew Billy was a Christian til I read this book. I also did not hear bad things about him later until I read it here. I am really sorry with how the Astros organization treated Billy when he was traded . What most players do not realize is how hard it is to lose players we have loved and cheered and prayed for. I believe that being a fan for the Astros is a very insecure spot as the owners trade players Willy nilly. If Billy reads this I ask that he speak to management of teams to consider the fans. Who wants to buy a Jersey with a name on it that will be obsolete at an expected time . The new management is just about as bad as Drayton McClain's killing of the team after we went to the world series and even wanted to change their name. Billy will be remembered as a fast reliever for the Astros who' s fans were crushed when he was traded .Product details

When I read this book, I couldn't help but feel inspired by his life story. Unshakable faith, grit and determination. Enjoyable to read. Most highly recommend it. The little guy who not only could, but did. If you saw the last inning he pitched at the end of the season with the Braves, you could see it. He was NOT going to let the Braves lose - and he didn't.
Would love to meet this guy someday. Down to earth guy that tells it like it is. There's a youtube video of a reporter trying to bait him into blaming his team after a blown save, Billy just kept repeating "Its not the team, I sucked, its all on me." Stand up guy for sure!
I was so inspired by this book, I could not put it down. Read it in two sittings. Billy Wagner's story is an awesome story. His struggle from his very humble beginnings to the fine young man, husband and father he has become today. Not to mention the truly talented baseball player he was and could still be today, but he chose to spend time with his family and be a source of pride for the community he serves on a daily basis. I would have given this book 10 stars had I had to opportunity.
I always loved Billy as a great ball player but I love him so much more as a person now that I have read his book. I truly enjoyed this book. I could not put it down after I started reading it.
This is a great lesson for life and a blessing for anyone who reads it. He shows that we all have a purpose in life if we only trust God to show us the way. We would all be better people if we lived our lives by Billy pattern. I recommend this book for everyone who needs a bit of encouragement. You will walk away with a warm good feeling in your heart.
I really enjoyed Mr. Wagner story of his life. He had a pretty tough upbringing in Southwestern VA with a bunch of moves to live with various relatives and he was able to overcome those challenges and play Major League baseball for 16 years. From his story he is a Christian family man who retired to spend more time with his wife and four kids. He now lives on a farm in Crozet, VA and coaches his son's varsity baseball team for the Miller School. I am glad to see that Mr. Wagner has gotten it right about how important his family is to him rather than money or fame. He is just a few months older than me and I remember a few games of his career. One item I want to point out is that it was Carlos Beltran and not Carlos Delgado who made the last out of the NLCS for the Mets in 2006. Overall a good read and much better than many of the other sports biographies that I have read over the years.
Be prepared to be inspired. I have to make myself put this book down or I'd read the whole thing in one sitting. I'm a baseball fan, but even if I wasn't Billy's story will leave you inspired and encouraged. He helps us see that no matter the obstacles you see in your way they can be overcome and you just might surprise yourself in the process.
His life of faith is a testament to the power of God in even the most unlikely of us. Billy shares his life, his family and his testimony in a unique way and I'm even more of a fan of his than I was already.
If you're a baseball fan like me - you'll love the behind the scenes stuff Billy shares that will bring you right into the locker room, the bullpen and the minor leagues in ways the average fan would never get to see.
Don't hesitate to get this book.
Billy Wagner spent the vast majority of his big league career pitching for the Astros, Phillies and Mets - so, being a Braves fan, it wasn't until Wagner's final season that I had the opportunity to pull for him. I already knew Wagner was a great pitcher, but it wasn't until he joined Atlanta's staff in 2010 that I began to learn bits and pieces about his remarkable personal story outside the game of baseball.
He's literally "a kid from the sticks" who grew up dirt poor, struggled to prove himself to teachers who didn't believe in him and said he'd amount to nothing, and overcame tremendous struggles in his home life to emerge as one of the greatest relief pitchers in baseball history. It's a remarkable story.
A WAY OUT tells Wagner's story from beginning to end with brutal honesty about his shortcomings, struggles, and failures ... and how each and every disappointment was ultimately a building block that led to his success. Wagner seeks to inspire and encourage anyone who is looking for their own "way out" of the difficult times that sooner or later will all come our way.
I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy Christian non-fiction and uplifting personal stories. I'd also suggest that A WAY OUT is a baseball book you'd want your teen to read.
If you're reading this strictly as a sports book then you'll find it's less hard-hitting and graphic (read, the language is clean) than a lot of books in the genre - for example, the recent memoir DOC by Dwight Gooden - but it touches on many of the same themes (redemption, resilience) only in a vastly different writing style.
